Ethnographic research to describe the myriad "urban characters". Define, conceptualize, and navigate between the spaces and places of city. "Ethnography" itself is a term that was somewhat loosely borrwed from social anthropology, and it alludes to the situated, empirical description of peoples and races.

"Although the necessity for interpretation is obvious to ethnographers, it raises questions for those committed to more ostensibly ‘value-neutral’ and ‘objective’ social scientific approaches. From this perspective, interpretation can be an overly idiosyncratic and subjective exercise, too reliant on the proclivities and orientation of the ethnographer. Findings are thus unreliable; another ethnographer might well provide a strikingly different interpretation. In the absence more scientific ‘tests’, any broader findings of ethnography remain specious. Rengert (1997: 469), for example, makes this argument quite explicitly: Ethnographic research is the least scientific of the research approaches since, by definition, it involves a small sample size, is difficult to replicate, and contains a great deal of subjectivity and interpretation on the part of the researcher. Ethnographic research needs to be supplemented with carefully designed research projects in which the ideas developed are subjected to scientific rigor."
